Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmuller (1806-1874) was born in Germany into a musical family. His father was the founder of the Lower Rhine Music Festival and his younger brother a gifted composer whose work was greatly admired by Schumann. Johann moved to Paris in 1832 where he became a fashionable member of society, writing numerous songs, piano music and perhaps his best-known work, the ballet La Peri.
