Only Connect
Only Connect is a companion of 150 prayers to aid reflection and worship in a variety of settings – for personal use, for use on retreat or as a focus for groups. These honest, searching and inviting prayers connect us with God, with ourselves and with God’s world around us through the themes of contemplation, reconciliation, exploration, transformation, transition and consolation. As a resource for times of sadness as well as celebration, this book will be a real help to both the mature Christian and the new Christian, the lost and the found.

You're reviewing: Only Connect
E. M. Forster’s injunction ‘Only connect’ has long been a meaningful phrase for me. In the context of prayer it seems to get to the heart of the matter.
These prayers spring from a perceived need for quite personal prayers to use in both difficult and celebratory circumstances. I have also tried to adopt different styles, from the chatty to the formal, which I think reflects the range of settings when prayers seem to be needed, both where they very naturally express our developing relationship with God and where we fall back on prayer simply to get us through the day – or night. The sections mirror the variety of purpose and mood, from transition to reconciliation, from contemplation to consolation, sometimes with gaps for names, places, issues and silence, to make them your own. They are perhaps more for personal, ‘quiet day’ or group use than as public prayers, but people have said that they have drawn from this volume for their intercessions in church too.
I hope you will find these as helpful to use in the highways and byways of your faith journey as I have found the process of writing them helpful in mine. If you pushed me to choose my favourite from the prayers here, I would probably say this one, no doubt influenced by my lifelong involvement in education:
Heavenly Father,
give us a glimpse of heaven
in the smile of others and the faith of saints.
Give us a sound of eternity
in the stillness of waters and the beauty of music.
Give us a sign of transcendence
in the soaring of a spire and the starkness of the cross.
Give us hope for the future
in the cry of a baby and a school bell sounding.
Give us a clue to the right way
in a prayer answered and a Bible passage understood.
Give us a true appreciation of your generosity
in giving us your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen
Connect well!
