Sarah Watts’ music is well known to woodwind teachers and young musicians; in fact, my year 4 pupils are ‘mad for it’. This book uses proven titles from recorder editions of this series, with an economy of range that works well brass players. The range gradually increases – but only imperceptibly – so Razzamajazz would work well alongside other study books. A one-octave range of C to C is needed by the end of the book, so it would be an excellent companion for a pupil in their first year of development. The CD is mainly synthesized, including the trumpet demo sound, but the tempos are just right and the rhythm tracks are catchy. The book would also work well in a group situation and I would imagine there are possibilities for ensemble use later on. This is excellent repertoire for new learners. (Posted on 05/04/2011)
