FOREWORD
Schubert lived from 1797 to 1828 and in his very short lifetime of thirty-one years composed nearly one thousand songs as well as six large Masses, nine symphonies, string quartets (some lost), instrumental works, theatrical music, choral pieces and many other works. His output was phenomenal (in 1815, for example, he wrote 145 songs) and his influence on vocal writing has been profound.

This book contains a selection of Schubert's songs; they range from the very popular to the lesser known. It is intended as a singer's introduction to his extraordinarily expressive language. They may be sung by either soprano or tenor and each includes a first-class original translation. A careful study of this is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the song.

One of the many the amazing things about Schubert is the staggering emotional range of his work. Its depth and sensitivity are unique and this book aims to display the wealth of his musical and creative insights. No other composer has written so many vocal and emotional masterpieces.
