Alan T. Dale wrote two fascinating books between the late 1960s and early 1970s based on his experiences as a Methodist minister, missionary, teacher and teacher-trainer: these were called Winding Quest and New World. They were subtitled The Heart of the Old (New)Testament in Plain English, as they were designed specifically for young people with a reading age of 9 years (though some passages were for a reading age of 12). I was encouraged to buy them when I served my first curacy by my training Vicar. I have used them ever since. Thanks to the publishers Kevin Mayhew the two volumes are readily available again as one volume, with some editing out of some 60s and 70s phraseology. This is a wonderful and much needed re-publication, useful for clergy and lay leaders in junior churches, all-age worship and at baptisms. It is also a useful tool for teachers at primary schools. Every baptismal family receives a copy at my church, as do those prepared for First Communion. But is generally a good introduction for anyone wanting to get to know the Bible better. It is not a book of Bible stories, but stories from the Bible presented clearly but also theologically. My only request would be that the publishers might also re-publish the same author's Portrait of Jesus, which, while not a commentary, can be read with New World as an interactive commentary.
