Quick Overview

Hêliand is a medieval epic retelling of the gospels written in Old Saxon verse, translated into fresh and accurate English for both public worship and private study.
Hêliand is a ninth century poem in Old Saxon. The title means saviour, and the poem is a biblical paraphrase that recounts the life of Jesus in the alliterative style of a Germanic epic. It spans 71 chapters and is almost six thousand lines long, making it the largest known work of written Old Saxon.

The poem presents a gospel narrative that is distinctively medieval and North European, and has spiritual value as well as cultural or historical importance. As well as surprises like finding the wedding at Cana set in a mead hall, or seeing ancient cities called Romeburg and Nazarethburg, the poem is also provocatively fresh, recasting familiar stories in new ways.

Hêliand was composed with evangelism in mind, to be recited by bards, and retains its resonance today. This text is well-suited to use in public worship and private study, to connect with the cultural past of the Church and to hear the gospel again for the first time.
