Fantastic collection Review by Greg McAusland

An excellent collection suitable for providing voluntaries and preludes for the major feasts. I have enjoyed both this book and the companion book 2 for ordinary time. Well worth the price tag. (Posted on 27/04/2010)

This volume of 312 pages and 100 compositions on hymn tunes is a fantastic buy for the average church organist. It will take many days to play through this treasury for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, Lent and Holy Week, Easter and Ascension, and Pentecost and Trinity. It would be wise to mark carefully every piece that appeals to you and is within your technical ability. Schedule the ones you mark for particular Sundays of the Church Year and then start practising them in advance of the dates for which they are suitable. All the pieces are moderate in length from two to four pages. Kevin Mayhew has a fine stable of composers, such as Malcolm Archer, Rosalie Bonighton, Andrew Fletcher, Richard Proulx (American), Noel Rawsthorne, and Norman Warren.
My favourite is June Nixon of St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, Australia, whose works appear in many Kevin Mayhew publications. The fact that this is Book 1 augurs well for the future volumes!

Don't miss this wonderful collection. (Posted on 27/04/2010)
