Quick Overview

The book to grab when the congregation complains that the hymns are too high!
Every organist knows the congregation mantra, ‘we can’t sing up there!’ and not everyone has the skills to immediately transpose tunes down a tone or even two. Here’s the answer: a Kevin Mayhew mega collection which in many cases gives two or even three different keys for 314 hymn tunes. The result: your congregation will be delighted that the organist has come down to their level!

Well, finally!!! A publisher has had the common sense to bring out something that we've all been doing (with various success!) for years.
How often have we ALL been told that the hymn was too high or asked if we can have it a little bit lower coz we're not getting any younger!!
Now the purists among the brethren will be aghast at this book. How dare KM have the temerity to change the original keys and in some cases the harmonies as well!!!
My answer to such complaints is simple - would you rather have you're congregation singing lustily to your accompaniment or do you want them standing there in seething silence while you play a solo which includes melodies which reach high Ebs, Fs and Gs? I know which one I prefer!
I have used this book now for over two months both in my full time work at a crematorium and on Sundays in church. The difference is plain to hear. The look on people's faces and the strong sound produced during the singing is vidication alone! What has pleased me in particular is the number of men who've thanked me for finally allowing them to sing hymns comfortably and not screeching thus making themselves look and sound foolish.
Kevin Mayhew - I can't thank you enough!!! Congratulations on producing something of such value! I must just mention however, no. 253. Sounds hilarious if you ignore all the naturals and keep to the written key signature!!!!! (Posted on 08/09/2012)
