Quick Overview

One Hundred Special Arrangements
In Hymns for Occasions, Colin Mawby has taken 100 of the most widely used hymn tunes and worked his magic on them. These are not just last-verse treatments, but complete mini recompositions for each tune. There is an introduction (the sort that always sounds impressive but which contains enough of the hymn tune to act as an encouragement to the congregation), the standard harmonisation, a short interlude before the last verse, and a last-verse arrangement of great beauty adn originality followed by a fitting few bars of conclusion.

Hymns for Occasions - Organ Review by Greg McAusland
Star Rating
This collection is more than just harmonised final verses it also includes an introduction, a brief bridging section and a conclusion, useful if you know there is going to be a long procession, eucharistic preparation or collection. The structure of the bridging sections and conlcusion is simple enough so if you want to extend them it is quite easy to do so.

This book is essential for organists who want to liven up a hymn for an important occasion, but perhaps would not want to risk doing their own extemporisations. I would suggest though to use it for congregations who are very familiar with the hymn you are going to use. Wedding and funeral congregations particularly might flap if they hear an introduction rather than the usual playover.

I like this concept and they are a pleasure to play. (Posted on 27/04/2010)
