Quick Overview

The Christian Church was born in song. After the Last Supper, Matthew 26:30 tells us: ‘When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.’ And we have never stopped singing ever since thank God! It is with a sense of awe that we publish this latest edition of Hymns Old & New, realising afresh that we are part of such a unique history.

The title, One Family, Hymns Old & New for All Ages, reflects our belief that the Church should stand for an inclusive approach to all people, regardless of age, race or gender.
To support this approach:

• Many of the tunes in One Family have been lowered to ensure they can be easily sung by everyone, even those with the lowest voices.

• One Family has 789 traditional and modern hymns and worship songs. This includes more than 120 fine new texts, many of which have been set to well-known tunes, which means they can be slotted into a Service without rehearsal.

• Texts have been carefully chosen and edited so that their language is inclusive, and archaic forms have been avoided where possible.

It is our hope that all who use this book will feel that their fellowship does indeed embrace and support everyone.
