Hugh once a student of Jacqueline Du Pre and William Pleeth, and for several years the principal cellist with the London Symphony Orchestra, bows these great works with sweet, feathery tone. (Posted on 27/04/2010)

Tim Hugh's technique in this cellists right of passage is superb. I've not heard better intonation, cleaner part playing and a more controlled tone. I assume he plays the final gigue on a four-string rather than five-string instrument, yet the mighty three- and four -not chords barely interrupt the momentum. In the Sarabande of the same Suite, his bow sustains the heart-rending melody while gently picking up each harmonic below. Although the dances movements were conceived as 'concert pieces', they are firmly linked to the German passion for French manners. Hugh embraces their rhythmic characters, though they're never inflexible. Most are lively- high-stepping Bourrees, prancing Gavottes, elegant Menuets - and even the drawn out sixth Allemande never loses its sense of direction.

The Preludes make different demands, four of them reflecting the musing 'stylus phantasticus' of improvising German organist. Hugh eschews self indulgence- Bach speaks for himself - though the last Prelude, structurally a concerto, invites more energy. He's recorded distantly enough to subdue the snap of fingers and rasp of bow. The best performance on a modern instrument I've met (Posted on 27/04/2010)
