Quick Overview

Red Hot Recorder Tutor - The UK's bestselling recorder tutor
Laid out in a clear, simple way, Red Hot Recorder Tutor introduces the notes and the basics of music theory in digestible stages. With the free accompanying CD the children can play along and quickly make progress. They can clap along to the rhythm sessions, and copy the patterns played in the listening exercises. There are specially priced tutor packs for class teaching. The Red Hot Recorder Tutor Student copy contains tutor elements and the tunes, and the Teacher copy has piano accompaniments.

Because teachers had found Razzamajazz Recorder useful, I decided to write the Red Hot Recorder Tutor/Method. The recorder is such a wonderfully versatile instrument that I wanted to write a tutor book that taught good technique, but was also fun and motivating. I wrote to lots of recorder teachers and asked them what they would like to see in a new tutor, and tried to provide what was needed." ~ Sarah Watts

Definitely worth a look! Review by Symphonic (ABRSM Forums)

Has loads of tunes and comes with a CD. Some of the tracks have practice tempo and then a performance tempo. The pages are quite full of information but it does move fairly slowly and has a range of different tunes so that every aspect is covered. (Posted on 23/01/2013)
My younger students love this book! Review by Anon (musicroom.com)
Star Rating
It includes practice patterns and rhythm exercises to aid with counting and finger coordination, alongside catchy pieces. There are duets and trios near the end of the book. The CD is at a sensible speed for a change and the students love going home to perform to family!

Older students, or those that can already read music would get through this book very quickly, but perfect for the younger/slower learners. (Posted on 21/01/2013)
An excellent resource for my school recorder group. Review by "Shine" (musicroom.com)

The children love the pieces, they are fun and catchy. The progression of skills are ideal. Well laid out and easy to use. Great to have a CD backing track. The children are inspired and delighted with the progress they make! (Posted on 21/01/2013)
A really useful resource... Review by Anon (musicroom.com)

...which even makes playing B and A sound musical. I do think the print size is a little small, but this is because so much is included in the book. The CD is great and my year 3 beginners have really enjoyed playing the tunes. The addition of some duets with 'teacher' parts is useful for including slightly more advanced players. ... to play recorder and they all love it, singing and dancing along to the backing tracks. And the parents are happy to listen to them practice with the CD backing! (Posted on 21/01/2013)
It's nice to have some different melodies to play rather than the usual ones found in beginners books. Review by Anon (musicroom.com)

My pupils love to have the backing track to play along with, especially when they are just playing the first few notes. (Posted on 21/01/2013)
Would really like the CD to provide a backing track without the recorder playing Review by Anon (musicroom.com)

There are great tunes for beginners to play but I would really like the CD to provide a backing track without the recorder playing so that students can hear themselves play with the accompaniment. (Posted on 21/01/2013)

Easily the best recorder tutor- and I have tried several. Review by Anon (musicroom.com)

Pupils love the jazz background music on the CD, and they can play along right from learning just the first note. I have found progress to be faster than with other tutors, and a larger number continuing with their studies. Highly recommended.

I have used many recorder tutors over the years but I couldn't believe my luck when I found this one. Review by kdarkangel (musicroom.com)

I have been a woodwind teacher for 16 years and came across red hot recorder at one of my new schools in September 2007. I have used many recorder tutors over the years but I couldn't believe my luck when I found this one. My pupils had just started playing recorder in October and were asked to play in a Christmas concert, they played the EBGB's song - very "catchy" tune - they were even singing it in the corridors!! Easy to learn and sounded very impressive! They enjoyed every minute and I don't have to tell them to practice!!!! A very big thank you - more please!!

Great fun and easy to play Review by Anon (musicroom.com)

I teach recorder to 7-12 year olds and have tried many tutor books and this is by far the best. All the tunes and backing tracks are great fun and easy to play, the children actually looked amazed at how good they sound when playing. I only wish there was a whole series! I have ordered the Razzamajazz series by Sarah Watts and cannot wait to get them! (Posted on 21/01/2013)
This has to be the GREATEST recorder book I have ever come across. Review by Mother to 8yr & 4yr old, Milton Keynes (on musicroom.com)
Star Rating
Children just love playing from this book especially with the backing CD. It is the liveliest and most interesting book of its time, and SO MUCH FUN. The only downside is that for younger players, the second half gets a little tricky and requires more study and practice to reach the speed on the CD. I could not put my recorder down after helping my son with his practice and I have not played recorder in over 30 years. This is a must for children and adults and what a relief to find a book that keeps well away from 'Three Blind Mice' and brings LIFE into playing a fun instrument. (Posted on 21/01/2013)

Made up of Red Hot Recorder Duets, Red Hot Flute Duets, Red Hot Recorder Songs and Red Hot Dots, the Red Hot Series has something for everyone!

Red Hot Recorder Duets and Red Hot Flute Duets are an excellent introduction to ensemble playing. The jazzy piano accompaniments give a fun, popular feel, and a free CD is included to help learn the pieces and to play along with.

Red Hot Recorder Songs works in step with Red Hot Recorder Tutor to present imaginative and alternative ways to teach the recorder. The book contains new songs written especially to reinforce note learning, all with a popular style and 'feel good' accompaniment. Also included are rhythm exercises to strengthen rhythmic literacy, articulation, listening skills and intonation. There are also suggestions for extension activities.

Music notes are sometimes called dots for fun, and fun is exactly what Red Hot Dots is all about. It's a treasure chest of activities to encourage good music technique, offer fun musical experiences and expand musical horizons. There's a free CD and Red Hot Dots covers many aspects of the National Curriculum music syllabus for Key Stages 1 and 2. There's an opportunity to develop:

  • - performing skills, including singing in unison and in rounds, and playing percussion.
  • - composing skills - making up rhythms and improvisation.
  • - appraising skills - a chance to talk about musical styles and how music makes you feel.
  • - listening skills, like learning and remembering melody and words; use of tempo, dynamics and duration.
