Mersey Vespers
The life of Austin Smith shows how practical Christianity can be at one with the most intense and searching theological and philosophical thought. As a priest working with the dispossessed and disempowered – in particular with the black community of inner-city Liverpool – he has transformed lives. Just as transforming has been the effect this work has had on his understanding and experience of God. Over many years he has put on paper the insights gained and the profound questions posed by the ongoing process of spiritual discovery. These never-before-published writings re-examine every aspect of faith, entering into the realms of mysticism as frequently as they plea for re-engagement with the everyday concerns of humanity. A massively important book for all thinking Christians.

Priest and Poet Review by Father Kevin Kelly
Star Rating ‘Mersey Vespers: Reflections of a Priest and Poet’ is a new book of the writings of Passionist Priest, Father Austin Smith, complied during his work amongst the poor communities of Liverpool. Father Austin spent a considerable amount of his working life in Toxteth and, in retirement, still lives in the local community, where he is much respected by all.
‘I first read this manuscript ten years ago,’ said Father Kevin Kelly, who is still a close friend of Father Austin’s. ‘I said “it must be published”’. The book also charts Father Austin’s time in Toxteth during the riots of 1981. ‘It is also a reflection on growing old in a community which quite love him’, said Father Kevin.
