Where Is God in Depression?

Patrick Coghlan on the story behind his book...

For me, this book was quite a new style of writing. Previously, I had written a few family novels and a variety of different Christian resource materials; the latter being very much Biblical-based teaching, written with my minister’s hat on.

Now, with Where is God in Depression, I not only wore my minister’s hat, but also my counsellor’s hat, and I wrote it from my own personal experience of living with and managing depression and anxiety.

I always say that no-one can fully understand what it is like to live with depression and anxiety, unless they have experienced it themselves. Indeed, nothing could have prepared me for that feeling of complete despair, desperation, loss of confidence, and having no motivation. Suddenly, the simplest of tasks seemed insurmountable.

Where is God in Depression addresses a number of different issues linked with depression and anxiety; and how to deal with possible feelings of being distant from God.

There is light at the end of the dark tunnel of depression and anxiety. Let us not beat ourselves up for not always feeling close to God; but instead, learn new or different ways of experiencing closeness to God, during difficult times – like in depression and anxiety.

Where is God in Depression left me feeling quite vulnerable; but my intention was to encourage others living with depression and anxiety, as I shared something of my own journey, and what I have learned from it.

- Patrick Coghlan
