Embark on a musical adventure with Wild Cello, a captivating collection of 14 original Celtic-inspired tunes specially composed for beginner cellists of all ages. Building on her previous works - Clan, a narrative piece for cello and piano, and Folk & Beyond, an collection of traditional folk songs and original compositions - Joanna Borrett brings the spirit of traditional folk music to life with melodies that are both accessible and expressive. Designed to help early-stage players build confidence and technique, these enchanting tunes will transport you to misty highlands, rolling green hills, and the heart of a Celtic celebration. Wild Cello includes full piano accompaniments, free downloadable backing tracks to enliven your practice sessions, and sample tracks to guide your interpretation. Let your cello sing with the wild beauty of Celtic music! Pedagogical Value: The collection of 14 original Celtic-inspired pieces is designed to build confidence and technique in early-stage players, making it an excellent resource for educators seeking engaging teaching material. Comprehensive Learning Tools: The inclusion of full piano accompaniments, free downloadable backing tracks, and sample recordings supports a holistic learning experience, facilitating both practice and performance. Author's Proven Expertise: Joanna Borrett's previous works, such as Clan and Folk & Beyond, have been well-received in the music community, underscoring her credibility and experience in composing for string instruments. Alignment with Examination Standards: Borrett's compositions have been featured in syllabi like ABRSM's, indicating that her pieces meet recognised educational standards, which is beneficial for teachers preparing students for graded exams. Sample tracks are available to listen to HERE When asked to review this new book of fourteen Celtic cello tunes by Joanna Borrett I suspected that the interests and needs of the beginner cellist would be in good hands. The composer is a cellist and the writing sits well in the lower positions with plenty of opportunities to use different fingerings and positions for the more seasoned cellist. There is also due consideration given to the expressive and playable piano writing for the teacher who, like myself, may not be an accomplished pianist. Techniques are explored to expand the sound world from open strings and the lower positions. 'Rocking' is played entirely with natural harmonics in third position, 'Travelling by Wolf Light' asks for a speedy transition from first position to tapping the cello - in the interests of cellos not getting bashed I might have liked a bar to transition to this - 'Improvise' invites the cellist to play their very own theme in G major using Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as the base rhythm, a great opportunity to stimulate and encourage musical imagination. Several of the tunes have characterful melodies that scamper around, excellent for keeping an even tone with all the string crossings, while needing to be super rhythmic. 'Revelry' is straight out of a ceilidh party and is suitably infectious. 'Lorn' (Andante lacrimoso) invites the musician to be expressive and to leave the confines of first position. 'Howl' and 'Valour', both have opportunities for the older player to explore their mature expressive side, and 'The Rebel' has dark, furious undertones introduced with wild pizzicato. This is a valuable new compendium of Celtic melodies for Wild Cellists in any age group, easily sitting within Grades 2 to 4, supported with simple and interesting piano accompaniments for both teacher and parent to also enjoy. One Woman's Groundbreaking Path to Ordination in the Church of EnglandFirst In Line is the inspiring and candid memoir of Judith Rose, the first woman to become an Archdeacon in the Church of England. Spanning over five decades, Judith’s story traces her journey from a Somerset farm girl to a pioneering leader in the Anglican Church. With warmth and honesty, she recounts her early career in agriculture, her gradual awakening to faith, and her unexpected call to ministry at a time when women’s roles in the church were strictly limited. Through personal anecdotes and historical insight, Judith offers a unique perspective on the struggles, debates, and triumphs that shaped the movement for women’s ordination. She shares the challenges of breaking through ecclesiastical ‘glass ceilings’, the joys and frustrations of parish and cathedral life, and the pivotal moments that changed the face of the Church of England forever. Mixing national history with her own remarkable experiences, First In Line is both a vital contribution to the story of the church and a testament to perseverance, faith, and the quiet courage of those who lead the way for others. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of women’s ministry, the life of the church, or the power of answering a call against the odds.--'In First in Line Judith Rose tells a typically modest tale of her own life and ministry as women began more firmly to take their proper place in the life of the Church of England. In fact she was a trailblazer, time and again gently but firmly pushing the Church on to accept the role of women alongside men. Judith started her life in farming but was soon ploughing her own furrow through the roles of parish worker, deaconess, deacon, priest and archdeacon. She served in several parishes, a cathedral, a bishop’s chaplaincy and a diocese; nothing of the Church of England was hidden from her. She therefore gives us a fascinating inside view of the Church convulsing and eventually ‘resolving’ the complex issues around women’s ministry. What makes the narrative particularly engaging is the way Judith’s personal story threads through the bigger picture. We follow her reasoning as she makes decisions about her ministry. We see her having jobs before she is legally qualified to do them. We see her ‘accidentally’ at the heart of far-reaching changes, guiding debates at General Synod. We see her coping with domestic complexity as she finds deep happiness with her husband David in her 50s, only to lose him tragically eight years later. Judith hands the torch on. The struggle for equality in the Church is not over. Judith tells of how as an archdeacon in some conservative evangelical churches she could preside at Communion but not preach, while at some anglo-catholic parishes she could preach but not preside. Paradoxes remain. In this charming and straight-forward memoir we come closer to these debates and many readers will have cause again to be grateful for the quiet courage shown by Judith and her generation of pioneering women.' - John PritchardFormer Bishop of Oxford Specifications Book Format - Paperback/eBook Published - June 2025 Weight - 175g Page Count - 125 Dimensions - 198 x 129 x 9mm ISBN - 9781838582210

Available for Pre-Order now. Requiem Aeternam is a deeply personal and richly evocative choral work by D N Carter, written with both tradition and accessibility in mind. Drawing on years of experience as a choir leader, musical director, and lifelong church musician, Carter presents a modern Requiem rooted in the structure of the All Souls Mass, but reimagined for today’s choirs and audiences. Carter's Requiem Aeternam distinguishes itself through its seamless integration of traditional Latin texts with accessible English settings and familiar hymn tunes, creating a uniquely inclusive and emotionally resonant experience.Spanning seventeen flexible movements – including familiar texts like Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Pie Jesu – this setting blends sacred English texts with lyrical melodies reminiscent of Fauré, juxtaposed with moments of Duruflé-inspired harmonic richness and contemporary textures. Three well-loved hymns invite optional audience participation, and themes of rest, remembrance, and spiritual hope run throughout. From the swirling dissonance of the opening Introit to the serene beauty of the Pie Jesu, Carter's score offers a diverse and compelling musical landscape.Written in the quiet moments between teaching, parenting, and conducting, this Requiem reflects Carter's personal journey through loss and his deep connection to the choral tradition, inspired by his experiences as a chorister at Ripon Cathedral. This Requiem is as heartfelt as it is musical – a work shaped by grief, gratitude, and a love of choral singing. Whether performed in full or in part, Requiem Aeternam offers choirs a moving and meaningful journey through life, loss, and the promise of peace.
