Drawing on years of experience as a choir leader, musical director, and lifelong church musician, Carter presents a modern Requiem rooted in the structure of the All Souls Mass, but reimagined for today’s choirs and audiences. Carter's Requiem Aeternam distinguishes itself through its seamless integration of traditional Latin texts with accessible English settings and familiar hymn tunes, creating a uniquely inclusive and emotionally resonant experience.
Spanning seventeen flexible movements – including familiar texts like Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Pie Jesu – this setting blends sacred English texts with lyrical melodies reminiscent of Fauré, juxtaposed with moments of Duruflé-inspired harmonic richness and contemporary textures. Three well-loved hymns invite optional audience participation, and themes of rest, remembrance, and spiritual hope run throughout.
