What the Advent candles mean

The Advent ring holds four candles around the outside and, usually, a fifth in the centre. One is lit on each Sunday of Advent, and the centre candle on Christmas Day.

First Sunday, 29 November - Hope. Purple. Often called the Prophets' candle, remembering those who foretold the coming of Christ.
Second Sunday, 6 December - Peace. Purple. The Bethlehem candle.
Third Sunday, 13 December - Joy. Rose or pink. Gaudete Sunday, when the mood lifts and the colour lightens.
Fourth Sunday, 20 December - Love. Purple. The Angels' candle.
Christmas Day - Christ. White, in the centre.

Some churches use red candles rather than purple, and some traditions light a blue set. All of these are available in our Advent candle range, with rings and frames sized to match.
