Having first emerged from Europe's heartlands, the Celts retreated under the Roman Empire to its western fringes, and from the fifth to the twelfth centuries the early church flourished in Gaul, Britain and Ireland, leaving us an important legacy from which to learn and draw fresh inspiration.Today there is a growing interest in the witness and teaching of the Celtic Church, and Ray Simpson offers us a rich overview of a spirituality now re-emerging from the mists of time. Each chapter describes a feature of the Celtic Church, its worship, rhythm of prayer, sense of community, healing, hospitality and missionary spirit, and challenges us to learn its lessons, principles and way of being renewed in Christ from saints such as Cuthbert, Columba, Aiden, Hilda and Patrick.Ray Simpson's valuable resource includes a comprehensive notes section and the many prayers and responses woven in to the text to lend it a very practical emphasis. This new revised edition incorporates an inspirational study guide with exercises, follow-up suggestions, Bible study and questions for discussion intended for individuals and groups alike. Instruments: ManualsThese 30 pieces were written by Herbert Howells as piano sight-reading tests. They are, however, much more than visual traps for the unwary.By turns graceful, surprising, and touching, they are inventive miniatures wholly characteristic of the composer. Like the occasional pieces written for examination purposes by Ravel and Debussy, they have a unique value. They have been slightly adapted by Alan Ridout to make useful manuals-only pieces for organ.

From Matt McChlery Paul's third missionary journey ended in Jerusalem, where he encountered an angry and violent mob who almost killed him. His life was saved by some Roman soldiers who arrested him and he ultimately ended up in prison in Rome where he awaited trial as a Roman citizen. His imprisonment lasted two years, with his life hanging in the balance. During this time, Paul wrote a number of letters to his friends and churches he had planted that are packed full of practical and spiritual advice for Christian living that we can still learn from today. The Prison Letters will take you on a thematic 40-day journey through the books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Packed full of personal anecdotes and wisdom, the message Paul conveyed to his readers during his imprisonment is brought to life. Are you ready to tear open the envelopes and unfold the pages of these powerful letters? As you do, you will discover how you can live for Jesus in a more real and intimate way. This comprehensive book contains Scott Joplin's entire output for the piano, which, apart from a small number of songs and two operas, in fact made up everything he wrote. The 41 rags, five waltzes and six marches include popular favourites such as The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag, as well as the lesser-known Heliotrope Bouquet and The Crush Collision March. The roots of pop music today can be traced right back to the music of Scott Joplin. Ragtime of the 1890s in turn influenced jazz, country music, skiffle and rock 'n' roll, through to pop in the 1960s. Its energetic style is driven by the rhythm of the left hand against the syncopation of the right. Ragtime music instantly appealed to millions, and more than a hundred years after its birth it still enjoys great popularity today. The greatest Ragtime composer of all, Scott Joplin is rightly regarded as a true musical giant.ContentsA breeze fromAlabamaCountry clubElite syncopationsEugeniaEuphoric soundsFelicity ragFig leaf ragGladiolus ragHeliotrope bouquetKismet ragLeolaLily queenMagnetic ragMaple leaf ragOriginal ragsPalm leaf ragParagon ragPeacherine ragRose leaf ragScott Joplin's new ragSearch-light ragSensationSolaceSomething doingStoptime ragSugar caneSunflower slow dragSwipesyThe cascadesThe chrysanthemumThe easy winnersThe entertainerThe favouriteThe nonpareilThe ragtime danceThe strenuous lifeThe sycamoreWall Street ragWeeping willowBethena waltzBink's WaltzHarmony club waltzPleasant momentsThe Augustan club waltzesAntoinette (March)Cleopha (March)Combination marchMarch majesticThe crush collision marchThe rosebud march

Throughout his 30-year career as principal flautist of the opera orchestra of La Scala, Milan, Rabboni came in close contact with opera repertoire and singers of the time, and thereby gained a priviliged insight into the bel canto style. It is clear that Rabboni composed his Sonatas to explore different sonorities and phrasings, as well as to establish a better overall technique for the flute. Although at first they appear to be straightforward, these sonatas encourage the flautist to look beyond merely playing the notes, and to strive towards creating shapes and lines within the music, an approach which is often disregarded in favour of developing technique.
