Many people are uncomfortable with the way in which leadership has been exercised within Christianity, and in this book Nicholas King looks at what the Bible tells us about the exercise of authority. The message is that human beings, with the exception of Jesus, always get it wrong, unless they are prepared to 'lead by listening' or exercise authority as an act of loving service. For the only absolute authority is God.Why speak of 'the helplessness of God'? Because God is voluntarily dependent on our response, helpless until we make our decision, and will not force us to choose our own good. God's love is never tyrannical, always utterly respectful of human freedom. That must be the way ahead for authority in the Church. This timely and important book focuses on the current crisis within the Catholic Church over the sexual abuse of children by priests and other church personnel and the church hierarchy's failures in addressing the crisis. Seventeen skilled practitioners have contributed their experience in readable and approachable language. The opening chapters deal with the difficult and perplexing issue of child abuse by clergy. These are followed by contributions by an abuser, two victims and a bishop who was responsible for responding to the abuse. There are chapters on how best to respond to abuse, the appropriate treatment of victims and perpetrators and the proper pastoral response to allegations. The final section deals with education and the prevention of child sexual abuse in order to prepare people for ministry and ensure a culture of safeguarding in the Catholic Church. This is essential reading for all priests and church personnel, concerned lay Catholics and professionals involved in victim treatment and perpetrator rehabilitation. Many chapters will also offer useful resources to media professionals. Right-click and save: Contents and introduction

For over fifty years, David Adam has sought to affirm the presence of God by rejoicing each day in the fact that 'God is here' and with us wherever we are. Believing that prayer should involve the whole of our being, he decided to use hands and eyes as well as mouth, heart and mind. He would keep a 'prayer diary' and pen a prayer every day, using the time to focus on the love and presence of God. Many of these prayers were deeply personal, others were prayers relevant to the moment alone. He has shared some of these prayers with us in this book in the hope that they will encourage you to keep your own prayer diary which would provide your own special moment in the day for focusing on God. With a whole year's worth of such prayers, his book invites you to 'affirm the presence' each day and to rejoice in the love and closeness of God.

The films Calendar Girls and The Full Monty, on which this course is based, have one thing in common: nakedness. However, this is simply the trigger for the true revelations which give these stories their heart. This course has six weekly sessions, taking themes from film scenes and applying them to the Bible, exploring ways in which we are revealed to ourselves and to God, and how God reveals himself to us and to the world. Meditations precede each session, encouraging participants to read, reflect, pray, think, question and be creative in their own time. Each session is self-contained, meaning if a participant cannot attend one week, they will not fall behind. And don't worry, there is no nudity involved!

The desert is an unforgiving and dangerous place and one few would enter by choice. And yet a recurrent theme in the Bible is that some of the key characters bound up with the history of our faith were shaped by just such a place. And so too, it is, with us.Drawing upon the stories of the likes of Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Miriam, Elijah, the psalmists, Hosea and his wife, John the Baptist and Jesus himself, Joyce Huggett explores how God worked through them and how their lives can be a true inspiration for our own.The desert is a place of formation and transition, of revelation, new beginnings, miracles and grace. And in it we can encounter a God who will truly transform us.

The Christian faith impels us to seek justice - we see this especially in Jesus' ministry, and in the message of the prophets and so it is very clear that God loves justice. It is an integral part of the gospel and this is what Jesus did - ministering to the people that were marginalised and oppressed - ministering to the people that didn't count in his time.'ContentsFeast your mind on what is pureHe broke the rulesHappy to shareJustice like a riverOne of us, flesh and bloodYou're the oneWe've silenced the prophetsWe hear your cry, LordBe the hands of JesusTeach us how to walkWe will pray for you, sisterWe saw beauty in the ashesIf we have never soughtLet the world be changed

The singing of hymns and psalms in worship pre-dates Christianity. It is something that Jesus himself would have been familiar with in the temple, and he certainly sang at the Last Supper; 'and after psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives', writes Matthew. Although none of the hymns on this recording can be dated from the time of our Lord, we do start at the 7th century, and the listener will hear many of the hymns most loved by today's Christians. Some of the hymns are sung in the traditional manner; others have been newly arranged in a strikingly original way, by Colin Mawby, while the remainder are prefaced or followed by a short improvisation by Malcolm Archer. We feel that the recording amply demonstrates that hymn-singing is not just alive and well, but flourishing beyond all measure.Malcolm Archer and Colin Mawby made the arrangements for this recording, a fact that speaks for itself!
