In the early centuries of the Christian Church, adults undergoing a period of instruction prior to receiving baptism were known as catechumens. This process of preparation, known as the catechumenate, fell out of use over the centuries, but in 1962 some elements of the early pattern were reintroduced in the Roman Catholic Church, initially for use in missionary work.The number of adult baptisms steadily increased, and in 1972 the restored catechumenate became the necessary prelude for all adult baptisms in the Roman Catholic Church.
