Five Romantic Waltzes by Brian Davidson offers intermediate to advanced pianists a collection of original waltzes, each with its own distinct voice and expressive palette. Begin your journey with the ‘Slavonic Waltz’, where lyrical melodies and expressive phrasing are paired with lively dance rhythms and rich harmonies. Next, the ‘Turkish Waltz’ introduces exotic flavours and rhythmic vitality, featuring bold accents and dynamic contrasts that invite spirited interpretation. The ‘Russian Waltz’ follows with deep, resonant harmonies and sweeping lines, capturing the grandeur and passion of Russian musical tradition. Pianists will find expressive markings such as cantando, poco ritardando, and con Pedale, encouraging nuanced phrasing and dynamic contrast throughout. The 'Hebrew Waltz' introduces a new sound world, with modal inflections and a gentle, singing quality. Its flowing lines and subtle rhythmic shifts evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth, while the use of pedal and carefully placed accents add depth and resonance.Rounding off the collection is the 'Petite Valse Romantique', marked semplice, which charms with its simplicity and elegance. This waltz features delicate textures, transparent voicing, and a graceful melodic line, providing a lyrical conclusion to the set.The pieces offer both technical challenges and opportunities for personal interpretation, making Five Romantic Waltzes a rewarding addition to any pianist’s repertoire.
A narrative piece for viola & piano by Joanna Borrett
This edition features the viola adaptation of a collection comprising of ten short narrative-based movements originally composed for cello and piano. It tells the tale of an ancient indigenous Scottish clan through a rich and vibrant musical journey.
Within the unique and moving composition, this book will transport you to a world of ancient beauty and tradition as it follows the clan’s story.
Suitable for Grade 4-5 level players and above, it uses many easy specialist effects, such as specialist pizz, col legno, ponticello, tapping, and singing, to enhance the drama of the work.
With stunning original music and an engaging narrative, this viola and piano book is the perfect way to connect with the spirit of Scotland.
Clan has been well-received by critics, with the string orchestra recording of Clan chosen as Album of the Weekend by Scala Radio, and Video of the Day at Gramophone. The third movement was recently played on Jools Holland’s Radio 3 programme ‘Earlier’
“Ravishingly beautiful music” - Paul Carr, Composer“Joanna Borrett’s Clan is an authentic journey with warm melodies that makes you feel part of a story which is sometimes peaceful and sometimes projects intense emotions. A true work of art. " - Eduardo Cruz, end sessions.com
“The music plays out like a ballet suite, a wistful introduction leading to a pithy, catchy reel lasting barely a minute and a euphonious celebration of unity, 'Us'. Borrett’s language is tonal and accessible, the string writing alluding to a very English tradition. Think Holst or Warlock, in a good way.
Borrett’s concision is striking, with much incident packed into movements which rarely exceed three minutes; Clan lasts just over 19 minutes but feels much bigger. 'Betrayal' and “Armour and Battlefield” take us into impressively astringent territory, and a final 'Chant' has wordless vocals before a solemn, downbeat close.“ - Graham Rickson, The Arts Desk, March, 2024.
“Clan forges a strong connection between folk and classical music and the stories come to thrilling life with such passion, beauty and feeling.” - Simon Godley, God is in the TV, April, 2024.

The Italian Concerto was published in 1735 and it clearly shows how Bach had assimilated the Italian influence and converted it into his own inimitable style. A reviewer, Johann Adolf Scheibe, wrote of it: 'Pre-eminent among works known through published prints is a Clavier Concerto by the famous Bach. Who is not to admit that this Concerto is to be regarded as a perfect model of a well designed Solo Concerto?' This reviewer had previously written of Bach: 'He would be the object of admiration if he possessed more pleasantness and made his compositions less turgid and sophisticated'. The Italian Concerto was written for a two manual harpsichord and this enabled Bach to build in a large dynamic range. It is notable for its melodic line, rhythmic verve, dynamic subtlety and sublime slow movement - a virtuoso work of excitement and originality which both challenges and inspires.
