John Cox

Having spent a rather long time at various universities including Cambridge, Oxford and the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, John was ordained to a curacy in the diocese of Liverpool in 1968. He spent a second curacy in an inner-city ex-slum parish in Birmingham and became rector in the same parish. After a five year period at Church House Westminster where he was Senior Selection Secretary, helping to select ordinands, he was made Canon Treasurer at Southwark Cathedral and Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Post-ordination training.

Following four years as Vicar of Roehampton he moved to become Archdeacon of Sudbury in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in 1995. When he retired in 2006 he was asked to be the part-time Diocesan Director of Education, a job he did for nearly four and a half years before retiring for a second time. It has been during these retirement years that John has been writing for Kevin Mayhew, in between being chair of governors of two primary schools, playing golf and enjoying river cruises.

From The Jordan to Galilee - A Lenten Course by John Cox This Lent Course calls us to join Mark in his account of Jesus’s journey from his baptism in the Jordan to the start of his mission in Galilee, and to reflect on our own journeys of faith. Drawing upon Jesus’ experience in his journey, we are invited to consider questions of what affirms us, who we are, the demons that afflict us and the angels that support us, and finally, our understanding of the gospel we share by word and action. It is a book about self-examination and the value we give to others in an age where people often feel excluded and alienated.

The Beatitudes are some of the best known of Jesus teachings. But too often they are thought to be a matter of simple common sense.Popular author John Cox, brings his open and accessible approach to the challenging nature of these short sayings revealing them as among the most radical of what Jesus had to say. This five week course for individual or group study, explores the context of ideas in the Beatitudes, the insights that differing translations bring to them, and how they continue to challenge us in our world today including our attitude to possessions, to loss and forgiveness, to judgement and salvation.Ideal for all of us during Lent. An Advent course based on the prophecies of IsaiahThe journey from darkness to light is upheld in the season of Advent - set in the Church's calendar in the dark winter days that look forward to and long for the coming of Christ, the light of the world. It is Christ, amidst the darkness of world events who promised that light had come to the nations bringing good news to the poor, release to captives, sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed. In these words, quoted from the book of the prophet Isaiah, the year of the Lord's favour had dawned. This five-session course, suitable for group or individual use, explores what each prophecy means for the world today - through reflections, readings, questions and prayers.

Based on the traditional hymn 'O come, O come Emmanuel', John Cox's Advent course provides the opportunity for a reality check: the reality of who we are and what our world is, the reality of our hopes and fears. It encourages us to look afresh at the reality of Jesus, the One who comes and ask how much he is really a part of our lives. As we look forward at Advent, this book encourages us to look in other directions as well: to look around at those who are lost and alienated, at outcasts and refugees; to look within us and within the world; to look up to find hope and aspiration; to look with gratitude; and to look with the eyes of loving response as we meet with Christ, the One we long for, the One who we believe comes to meet our needs and those of our world. This short course of six sessions is intended for use by small groups but could equally be helpful for individual use in setting a framework for private study, devotion and reflection.ContentsAbout the authorIntroductionAdventWreaths and candlesThe Great AntiphonsLookingHow to use this bookThe sessionsLeadersMusic suggestionsSession one - God's welcome to allSession two - FreedomSession three - Light in the darknessSession four - Key of DavidSession five - Lord Almighty, the giver of the LawSession six - Emmanuel, God with us

Church schools are different not because they are exclusive but because they are distinctive. But just what constitutes this distinctiveness? It is more than a matter of 'caring and sharing'. This timely book seeks to help all concerned with education in church schools to explore this question. John Cox, a recently retired Diocesan Director of Education, suggests that even Christian values are not enough - it is the beliefs that underpin these values that makes the real difference: belief about God, about what it is to be human, about the Church and about the world. This is worked out in terms of the Kingdom values such as justice, forgiveness, gratitude, generosity, truth and love. With chapters that also include a critique of the Every Child Matters agenda, and RE and Collective Worship, this is an invaluable book for head teachers, governors and parish clergy. Quotes on this title' Education is always at the centre of society's attention, and the place of the Church in education has never been under so much scrutiny. Meanwhile the Church of England is saying that church schools are at the centre of its mission. John Cox's level-headed and informative book is therefore very timely and deserves to be widely used as a background to all that's emerging in contemporary debate. Read, mark, learn and inwardly digest - then take courage and get involved.'The Right Reverend John Pritchard - Bishop of Oxford and Chairman of the Church of England Board of Education and National Society' John Cox has written a book that will be of immense value to Governing Bodies, Boards of Education and Headteachers especially of church schools. Three things mark this book out as a unique and timely contribution to the Christian education of children. First, it is grounded in clear, orthodox and practical theology. It explains why communicating the depths of the Christian tradition is so enriching for children.Secondly, it is full of wise, practical advice and suggestions which are accessible and useful.Thirdly it reflects the pastoral sensitivity and accumulated experience of its author acquired over many years as a Parish Priest, Cathedral Canon and Archdeacon. This is a gem of a book, the best of Anglicanism and something for all the church schools in my own Diocese.'The Right Reverend Tim StevensBishop of Leicester'A Secretary of State for Education once observed that in general, church schools shared a plus factor, if he knew what it was he would 'bottle it'. John Cox who was a highly respected and popular Diocesan Director of Education delves down into what should be really distinctive about the ethos of a church school, and of Church of England schools in particular. This is a timely and helpful book which will benefit all involved with church schools, but which also makes a fine contribution in support of what is offered in such schools.'The Right Reverend Nigel Stock - Bishop of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich

Tackling difficult subjects from the pulpit is not an easy task: it takes a degree of courage and sensitivity. Reluctance to risk such preaching often stems from simply not knowing how to go about it. There are many more difficult subjects than could be addressed in the first book of this series, so here are a further 72 topics from Abortion to Wealth, Fraud to Promiscuity, and even the contentious issue of Superstition. Each subject includes a biblical text, some background information, sermon ideas, a story and a thought to take away, with the authors bringing their own expertise and particular style to the format.AuthorsRupert Bristow, Jocelyn Bryan, Tony Castle, Helen Costigane, John Cox, Paul Cox, Brian Fahy, Brendan Geary, Ed Hone, Deborah Jones, Bruce Kent, Alison Moore, Chris Morley, Paul Nicholson, Siobhán O'Keeffe, John Parr, Robert Reiss, Clare Richards, Edgar Ruddock, John Saxbee, Ray Simpson, Joy Tetley, Helen WarwickContents SubjectsAbortionAbstinenceAdoptionAIDS/HIVAmbitionAngerAnimal rightsAnti-semitismAstrologyCapitalismCensorshipChildlessnessConflictDepressionDeprivationDespairDisciplineDiscriminationEmbryologyEuthanasiaExorcismFertility/infertilityFortune-tellingFraudGay marriageGenetic manipulationGluttonyGossipGuiltHealingHuman rightsHungerHypocrisyIslamophobiaLustLyingMagicMaterialismMoneyMulticulturalismNatural DisastersOld ageOrgan transplantPainPermissivenessPersecutionPowerPrejudicePridePrisonPromiscuityPunishmentRapeReconciliationRepentanceResponsibilityResponsible behaviourRevengeRiskScandalSecularismSlanderSterilisationSuperstitionSwearingTheftTokenismTravellers and gypsiesUsuryVivisectionWealthWorld hunger

Sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste are the five physical senses, but there are many more senses we can use to explore the meaning of Christmas - a sense of balance, a sense of justice, a sense of wonder, a sense of mystery, a sense of purpose, and so on. In all Senses focuses on these many senses, making connections through them with the Jesus story and the Christian journey. For each day of the four weeks of Advent there is a reading, reflection, response and a prayer. By exploring the story of Christ's birth through all our senses we can come to it afresh, welcome him with renewed delight and worship him with a deeper sense of intimacy.

This compendium of prayers, reflections, Bible-based monologues, sermon ideas and full services is a valuable resource for those who devise and lead worship. As well as more general material, the focus is on the two great festivals of Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. The book contains over 300 prayers, with opening prayers, confessions, intercessions and blessings set out for the Christian Year and specific topics. The material is drawn from books already published by our popular author, John Cox and is brought together here to assist those looking for background information, ideas for sermons, prayers and talks as they prepare to lead congregations in their worship. The reflections will both stimulate and encourage them in their own spiritual journey.Contents Feasts and FestivalsAdventAdvent wreaths and CandlesChristmasEpiphanyAsh WednesdayMothering SundayPalm SundayHoly WeekMaundy ThursdayGood FridayHoly SaturdayEasterThe biblical accountsThe Easter liturgya. This book provides a valuable resource for those leading worship and preaching through Holy Week and Easter. Each day has an introduction based on the Gospel accounts, drawing out the different and rich perspectives of the four Evangelists. A reflection is then offered for sermon material and a full service is provided. Each of the Three Hours of Good Friday has a different approach - a dramatic reading of the Gospel account from St Matthew, meditations on the Passion with St Mark and a service based on readings from both the Old and New Testaments. As well as an Easter vigil and a service of Resurrection for Easter Day, there are short services for Easter Light and the Easter Garden.
