John Cox

Having spent a rather long time at various universities including Cambridge, Oxford and the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, John was ordained to a curacy in the diocese of Liverpool in 1968. He spent a second curacy in an inner-city ex-slum parish in Birmingham and became rector in the same parish. After a five year period at Church House Westminster where he was Senior Selection Secretary, helping to select ordinands, he was made Canon Treasurer at Southwark Cathedral and Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Post-ordination training.

Following four years as Vicar of Roehampton he moved to become Archdeacon of Sudbury in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in 1995. When he retired in 2006 he was asked to be the part-time Diocesan Director of Education, a job he did for nearly four and a half years before retiring for a second time. It has been during these retirement years that John has been writing for Kevin Mayhew, in between being chair of governors of two primary schools, playing golf and enjoying river cruises.

A comprehensive introduction to Christianity and Christian faith. The title of this book is intentionally and provocatively ambiguous. Faith is more than matters of fact. It involves relationship and trust, a belief in and not simply a belief that. For those who are interested in matters of faith, or those just enquiring, here is a valuable introduction to all aspects of Christianity and Christian faith in a brief and accessible form. You'll find short but informative articles written by a wide range of authors who bring their experience and expertise from different denominations and traditions, giving richness to what is offered here. Whether it is matters of information or a matter of people's relationships with God and one another, it remains true that faith matters. In trying to be 'perfect' it is possible to miss being 'better'. Insights from the world of golf are drawn upon in this six-week group course as an aid to understanding the life of faith and the spirit. (Don't worry, all golfing terms are explained for the non-golfer!) John Cox, former Archdeacon of Sudbury, explores how we might become better - as individuals, in our relationships, as people of faith - without being torn by the guilt of not being perfect. Each session offers introductory thoughts, prayers, readings and suggestions for discussion and activities. As a resource for preachers this latest book by John Cox studies thirty dreams and visions reported through pages of Scripture, from Jacob's vision of the ladder to Mary's vision of the angel Gabriel announcing she would be the mother of Jesus. Each of the thirty sections explores something of the background to the dream or vision, providing thoughts and illustrations for sermons. Dreams and their interpretation have been recorded for over 4000 years and they continue to mystify and intrigue us.

You've said the Lord's Prayer so often that you know it off by heart. But does it still challenge you? Can you truly stand up to the demands of this most holy and beloved of prayers? In his new book, The Challenge of the Lord's Prayer, author John Cox forces us to face the prayer of Jesus head on and not to pray it lightly. He provides valuable insights into its meaning and relevance today, raising important questions to challenge those who have the courage to pray this ancient prayer with a true and living faith. As John says: 'We sometimes think that prayer is all about asking, but in asking for things for ourselves, our very asking challenges us about what we are doing - in relation to God and in relation to others.'John Cox was ordained priest in the Anglican Church in 1968 and has worked as curate and rector of an inner-city ex-slum parish in Birmingham, as well as being Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Post-ordination training. Having retired twice, he now spends his time writing, playing golf and enjoying river cruises. The Challenge of the Lord's Prayer insists that we put God first in our praying and demands that, as we ask God for forgiveness, we consider the needs of others and how we, in turn, forgive them. And it calls us to stand up to the evil in our world today.Click here to view contents

Excuses and reasons why people don't go to churchPopular author John Cox offers suggestions why fewer people are going to church these days and where the church needs to take action. In the first part of the book he looks at the main reasons people give - some of them may even be just excuses but should not be ignored by churches. The second part of the book considers the impact of the consumerist society and the scientific revolution on people's beliefs and behaviour. The book concludes with insights from the incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection that offer ways forward and reminders of what must not be lost.

How do we speak of God who is not physical but spirit? We follow the Bible and use body language. We speak of God walking in the Garden, of talking with prophets and kings. Such body language speaks powerfully about the way we understand God acting in this world and relating to it. This book explores how such symbolism appears in the Bible and what it tells us about God. It also examines the way in which some of Jesus' physical features are described in the Gospels to convey the evangelists' understanding of his distinctive actions.

Do you ever feel it's all got a bit too much? No matter how hard you work, you feel you haven't done enough and it's your fault?Anyone in a position of leadership is likely to have felt like this at some time. If the feelings persist and become worse, pressure can lead to stress, breakdown and burnout, an illness every bit as real as physical illness, only more hidden and more difficult to admit to.Speaking from his experience of leadership in the church, John Cox tackles the subject of stress - related depression in this guide to basic principles about how to stay healthy as a leader and how to offer healthy leadership. Drawing on some of the acknowledged and researched ideas of the experts, he puts those ideas into the context of the Christian faith and of people we meet in the Bible.Contents About the authorIntroductionChapter 1: How are you feeling? What kind of illness?Physical selfEmotional, thinking selfSpiritual selfSocial selfChapter 2: A matter of timeGreat if you are feeling fineBut what if you are not?Pressures of timeTime is elasticBlameWorking harder and harderLove yourself and have a breakHow do you spend your time?Chapter 3: A little help from your friendsReceiving the callExcusesThe stressed leader and his work consultantThe game of 'But'Handing over and letting goChapter 4: Getting personalRelationshipNot everyone loves youI, It, You and ThouTricky things, relationshipsLonging to be lovedHaving favourites can still be fairThe relationship with yourselfPeterThree strenghs, three vulnerabilitiesUndermining fearFailureInflated fearOn your feetChapter 5: But I tell you...Be good at receivingGuilty is goodBe not perfectThank God for a crisisChapter 6: I am a worm and no manSophie's taleCharlie's storyThe search for approvalThe fear of blameCompensatory ploysChange of heartRecovering the 'old' youA proper self-loveWe all need GOBsChapter 7: The good leader - the good shepherdOld fashionedThe sheherd in the BibleLeaders as sheperdsGod as shepherdThe Good ShepherdSix points to think about:OpennessRecognitionGuideCatalystSelf-givingVisionChapter 8: The ABC for healthy leaderHealthy lettersLetters to avoidConclusion

The Crucified and Resurrection Christ are icons, objects of worship and veneration, and our understanding of them cannot be separated from their place in scripture, liturgy and devotion. In them we find Christ looking at us, disturbing us with questions which confront us, out institutions, relationships, self-image and out inner sense of being. This book addresses not only what we ask of Scripture, but what scripture asks of us. In investigating the Cross and the Resurrection, it is we who are cross-examined. In them we seek to glimpse something of the truth God has revealed and through them we hope to discover something more of the mystery which is ourselves.

Lent is traditionally a time of fasting. All too easily we can see fasting in negative terms - of things given up. But we should also consider what we could increase and do more of. This set of daily Lenten meditations suggests something of each - some things to give up and some to take on. To make use of it will be something of a Lenten discipline: a fast from some activities whilst nourishing hearts and minds. Fast & Feast is also suitable for personal reflection and prayer.

Relationships. Our relationships form the heart of who we are. It is through Jesus' relationships and stories that we see the outworking of his teaching - and we are invited not simply to listen, but to enter into the accounts as participants. This invitation forms the heart of these services. 40 biblical characters narrate their story, enabling us to enter into the intense and passionate relationships recorded in the scriptures, whether it is Naomi's love for Ruth, David's lust for Bathsheba, the tragic story of Cain and Abel, or the denial and restitution of Peter. The stories are designed to be read out or dramatised within the services, which also contain suggested readings, hymns and prayers. Format: eBook (.pdf)
