A Lifetime's irrepressible prayersDon't read this book if you know all the answers, have an awesome and perfect prayer life, and spend each and every day knowing exactly what is God's purpose for you and your life. However, if you're happier with questions, have the kind of prayer life that occasionally needs putting on life support, and find yourself often wondering what's happening tomorrow, never mind next month or year, then why not read on?From life as a teenager, through college, then out into the wider world of work, marriage and children, this collection of old and new material, written by David Gatward, author of the bestselling Can We Talk, Lord?, spans the past 25 years of his life. It may not be filled with life-changing insights and earth-shattering wisdom, but it is real. And that, when it comes to it, is what God is actually really interested in: wherever you are, and whatever it is that you're doing, your creator wants you to share with him what's on your mind. So, what's stopping you?ContentsMy FamilyLord, I've a Few QuestionsLord, Are You There?ConfusedAlonePrayerParentsI WantMemoriesWhere Am I?Saying SorryHa! Ha! Poetry arouses feelings, sparks imagination, prompts arguments, shapes attitudes and keeps us alert to new possibilities. It is there to make us think. This collection of poems has been selected especially for use with children in schools. The poems cover a wide range of topics, including what we think about ourselves, friends, the environment, bullying and forgiveness.Highly suitable for use in any setting, some of the poems have an explicit religious theme, presented in a way that invites reflection and careful thought. This is an exciting resource of engaging and sometimes amusing poems that will help children to think about important issues. Brief commentaries and discussion questions are provided throughout to initiate discussion.Contributing Authors:Alison CarverAli DeeNick FawcettMichael ForsterBarry HartVal HawthornePaul KeebleDenis O'GormanSusan SayersBecky SilverW. In 47 daily Lenten reflections on readings from Luke's Gospel, beginning on Ash Wednesday, Alan Bartlett examines how we see Jesus. As we say in the creeds, Jesus was both truly God and truly human but,Alan Bartlett argues, Jesus remains a bit baffling and so remains distant. However, if we are prepared to spend time with the Jesus presented to us in the Gospels, looking slowly and honestly, then we will meet him, experience his deep humanity and move through that to see God in him and so meet God in him.

The Fragrance of Jesus looks at 20 of Jesus' miracles in terms of them being glimpses of God's kingdom; as demonstrations of God's power and also illustrations of qualities that will be experienced in his kingdom: some here and now and some when Jesus returns. Patrick Coghlan invites readers on a personal journey of discovery, encouraging them to understand prayerfully more about the kingdom - and apply lessons from Scripture to their daily lives and experiences.

Choosing a name for a child is one of the most important decisions parents make and it requires careful thought and consideration. The twenty-first century has seen a revival in names from the Bible, challenging the popularity of more modern names. This book is a guide for parents who want to choose a real Christian name for their child, answering the questions: What does the name mean? Where does it originate from? What are its Christian roots? How did it come to be a Christian name? Where applicable, the name day of the saint associated with the forename is given, for those parents who would like their child to know and celebrate their own special name day.

Many people who are brought up in Christian families give up on organised religion, but need they give up on Jesus? In this book, the wisdom of Jesus is isolated from Church structures, concentrating on the instructions he is reported to have given his hearers as regards the way to live in real peace. It is for anyone who is searching for meaning in life, a desire to be good and for peace of heart. Beautifully written, The Wisdom of Jesus opens up the limits of ordinary, everyday life, taking us to a fresh understanding of what Jesus was, and is, about.

A comprehensive introduction to Christianity and Christian faith. The title of this book is intentionally and provocatively ambiguous. Faith is more than matters of fact. It involves relationship and trust, a belief in and not simply a belief that. For those who are interested in matters of faith, or those just enquiring, here is a valuable introduction to all aspects of Christianity and Christian faith in a brief and accessible form. You'll find short but informative articles written by a wide range of authors who bring their experience and expertise from different denominations and traditions, giving richness to what is offered here. Whether it is matters of information or a matter of people's relationships with God and one another, it remains true that faith matters. David Schofield writes out of his own many years of experience in bereavement care and funeral practice. His aim is to offer advice to those, of any denomination, who are called upon to minister to the bereaved and to conduct funerals. By sharing his own thoughts and observations he hopes to pass on his knowledge, open up the subject of grief, bereavement and funerals and bring these into twenty-first century thinking.

The author looks at the balance between God working in his people to produce the character of Christ and God working through his people to continue Christ's work on earth. He examines this interplay in 12 biblical character studies. Using a mixture of narrative, commentary, background and reflection on Jacob, Mary, Hosea, Barnabas and others, the author shows how their faith and obedience developed and affected other people as they learned to cooperate with God.

Here is a collection of reflections based on scripts the author has written and presented for national and local radio stations over the years. They are bite-size meditations on a wide range of subjects, including Love, Lent, Journeys, Hope, Money, Dogs and forgiveness, Christmas preparations. The book can be used in a pick 'n' mix way, rather like jump leads or bump starts for your conversations with God. The Bible and Subject indexes will help if this is the approach you wish to take. Alternatively, the reflections are in a loose chronological order, as though they were stepping stones through the year. Most of the main Christian festivals are included, as well as other milestones in a typical year. In addition, each reflection includes a suggested Bible passage and questions to think about.Paul Canon Harris is a poet, writer and broadcaster based in Bournemouth. Saints are not set apart as perfect or sinless, for they have the same weaknesses as all humans, but they are who God has called them to be and in being themselves, they reveal God's glory. Saints are people who work in common union with God and he is seen at work in their lives. This book is to introduce you to some of the people who are heroes of the Church and are revelations of God's glory. We share a common union with them, for we have the same Creator and Redeemer and the same Spirit of God: in God we are one with them. Each celebration of a saint follows the same format: a short introduction to the saint's life, the Scripture readings for the saint's day, which are taken mainly from the Common Worship Lectionary, an opening prayer, intercessions, the peace and a blessing.Together with its companion volume Icons of Glory, this book will encourage you to explore the common union to which we all belong and to discover God's call to you, which is unique. This is a call to be a fellow worker with God and to reveal his glory in your life. To see full contents Click Here

Christ Our Peace offers six short, reflective services for use throughout Lent and Holy Week. Drawing on the early Church's tradition of using the weeks before Easter as a time of instruction, reflection and meditation, this collection provides one service for each of the four Sundays in Lent, together with Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday. Written by Stuart Thomas, the services are designed to be used flexibly. Each can stand on its own, but the individual elements - prayers, responses, songs and meditations - can equally be extracted and used in other contexts. The material is based on the ASB readings and themes for each Sunday in Lent, but is entirely independent and may be used by churches or Christian groups of any tradition. Recognising that quieter, more reflective services may not attract vast congregations, the book takes its inspiration from Christ's promise to be present 'wherever two or three are gathered'. There is space for silence and meditation, with suggestions for hymns from the New Anglican Edition of Hymns Old and New that match the thoughtful tone of the liturgy throughout. A Haven in the Storm 'Here today and gone tomorrow' - a succinct summary of the transient nature of life, but while the con- stant flux of this world is part of its fascination it also brings heartache, so much that we love inevitably plucked from us. Does anything stay the same? For the Christian the answer is a resounding yes, our faith rooted in the changeless God whose loving purpose never alters, his faithfulness having inspired, encouraged, comforted and enthralled generations of believers across the years. The prayer-poems in this book articulate the sense of confusion and loss that change can bring but express also God's promise to be with us come what may. They are designed to speak both for us and to us.Finding Forgiveness If some Christians can be accused of self-righteousness, the problem for most is the opposite: an all-too-painfulness awareness of their failings. Such an awareness has its place, if it leads to a genuine desire to change, but the last thing God wants is for anyone to struggle through life burdened by a sense of guilt or shame. At heart the gospel is about God's love and mercy, his offer of forgiveness for all through Christ. The prayer-poems in this book - some general, some more specific - articulate those two aspects: the frustration and sorrow we feel at our repeated faithlessness but also the assurance of God's unfailing grace. They are designed to speak both for us and to us.Our Broken World Where is God in our world today? News headlines seem to be dominated by stories of evil, sorrow and suffering, and as Christians we struggle as keenly as anyone to make sense of it all. How can we possibly talk of a loving God amid so much that seems to question or deny his presence? The prayer-poems in this book make no pretence to offer easy answers to such conundrums, but attempt rather to articulate our sense of confusion yet also the faith we hold on to despite them. They are designed to speak both for us and to us.Living with Loss To lose a loved one is one of the most testing experiences we will ever face, bringing a bewildering roller-coaster of emotions: grief, guilt, panic, anger and confusion, to name but some. How do we cope with such feelings? How can we channel them constructively rather than let them eat away within? How can we make sense of death and our own continuing life? For the Christian such questions are as pressing as any. The prayer-poems in this book - each written from personal experience - do not promise easy answers, but attempt to wrestle with the devastating trauma of bereavement while also offering words of hope, comfort and encouragement in the light of God's eternal promises. They are designed to speak both for us and to us.ContentsIntroductionThe unchanging GodOur refuge and our strengthHope in despairGod with usThe wonder of creationThe cycle of the seasonsfaith, come what mayBeneath the surfaceA cry for helpThe ever-present GodGod's awesome devotionA Haven in the StormCounting our blessingsThe assurance of faithKeeping faithA love like no otherThe transforming grace of GodA haven in the stormGrateful responseA prayer from the heartOur eternal hopeThe constancy of God's loveFinding ForgivenessIntroductionLord, forgive meTaking stockPride goes before a fallTrue richesCelebrating God's goodnessFaith in actionFlawed discipleshipLearning to loveLove divineStewardship of creationGood intentionsGod's way not oursAmazing graceGiving our allRenewed commitmentThe vital ingredientGlimpsing God's presenceA faith that showsOur Broken WorldIntroductionA divided worldBehind the labelsA world in needFaith in actionPraying for othersFaith and doubtThe riddle of lifeOne people?Questions of faithFor those who care enough to show itWhen God seems distantHope in times of confusionFor the elderly and infirmThe shadow of deathOur eternal homeLiving with LossIntroductionThe pain of lossFacing the truthLetting goThe shadow of deathHonestly rememberedGetting byNew beginningsDefeat and victoryFaith in things unseenThe price of lovingThanks for the memoriesThanksgiving for a parentComfort those who mournThe promise of new lifeA love that conquers deathWe'll meet again
