Throughout his 30-year career as principal flautist of the opera orchestra of La Scala, Milan, Rabboni came in close contact with opera repertoire and singers of the time, and thereby gained a priviliged insight into the bel canto style. It is clear that Rabboni composed his Sonatas to explore different sonorities and phrasings, as well as to establish a better overall technique for the flute.  Although at first they appear to be straightforward, these sonatas encourage the flautist to look beyond merely playing the notes, and to strive towards creating shapes and lines within the music, an approach which is often disregarded in favour of developing technique. Folksongs are a country's history told by the people themselves. They deal with everyday life and the perils of living in a particular age- of press-gangs and poachers, of the joys of a life at sea, and the sorrow of losing a husband to a foreign war. This volume, then, is a record of a tradition which is still alive and still changing, and singers should feel free to use it how they wish; with guitar, piano or small band; with one voice or several; for singing, playing, dancing or all three. In many cases the rhythm of the melody will have to be adapted to the underlay of the words in the second and subsequent verses- singers should use their discretion about how this may best be done.ContentsA-rovingA wonderful new ballad of a wonderful old manAh, the sighs that come from my heartAll round my hatAll through the nightAn old man's adviceAnnie LaurieAuld lang syneBarbara AllenBilly BoyBlow away the morning dewBlow the man downBobby ShaftoeBrigg FairCa' the yowesCharlie is my darlingCockles and musselsCome, live with me, and be my loveCome to my windowComin' through the ryeCreeping JaneDance to your DaddyDashing away with the smoothing ironDavid of the white rockDiverus and LazarusDown by the sally gardensDrink to me only with thine eyesEarly one morningFare thee well, cold winterFarewell, ye green fieldsFire down belowGolden slumbersGreen grow the rushes -Oh!GreensleevesHelston furry danceHere's to the maidenHush, my dear, lie stillJohn PeelJohnny ToddLoch LomondLord RandalMaids at eighteenMen of HarlechMy bonnie lies over the oceanMy grandfather's clockMy love is like a red, red roseO Waly, Waly (Somerset)O Waly, Waly (Scotland)Oft in the stilly nightOh can ye sew cushionsOh, no, John!On Ilkley Moor baht 'atOur Captain calls all handsPastime with good companyScarborough FairSeventeen come SundaySheepcrook and black dogStrawberry FairThe ash groveThe Bailiff's daughter of IslingtonThe banks of sweet primrosesThe barley mowThe blacksmithThe boar's head carolThe British grenadiersThe cherry-tree carolThe cuckooThe dark-eyed sailorThe fall of the leafThe false loverThe farmer's boyThe flowers in the valleyThe girl I left behind meThe Jolly ToperThe Keel RowThe lament of the border widowThe lark in the mornThe last rose of summerThe Lincolnshire poacherThe meeting of the watersThe Miller of DeeThe minstrel boyThe murder of Maria MartenThe oak and the ashThe ploughboy's dreamThe sweet nightingaleThe three ravensThe turtle doveThe unquiet graveThe Vicar of BrayThe water of TyneThe willow songThe wraggle-taggle GypsiesThis old manWestern windWhat shall we do with the drunken sailor? When the fancy-stirring bowlWidecombe FairYe banks and braesYoung Henry the poacher

Reheated sermons are about as palatable as reheated microwave meals: they fill you up but are ultimately unsatisfying and neither tasty nor nutritious. As we thrive on fresh food seasoned well, so also we grow in faith from sermons that present us with new insights into the Bible and challenge us with God's truth.Drawing on over 30 years' experience of preaching in settings as diverse as large Christian events and under a baobab tree in Africa, Paul Canon Harris provides sermon outlines and reflections on the gospel and other readings in the three-year lectionary cycle. He writes preacher to preacher, giving an outline, insight and illustrations for others to use in their own preparation.Paul Canon Harris is an Anglican priest, writer and poet. He has trained and encouraged many younger preachers in the UK and abroad and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 2's Pause for Thought and other radio stations. He is a Canon Emeritus of Gloucester Cathedral.Season the Preaching is an invaluable resource for preachers, group leaders and students of the gospels.

This compendium of prayers, reflections, Bible-based monologues, sermon ideas and full services is a valuable resource for those who devise and lead worship. As well as more general material, the focus is on the two great festivals of Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. The book contains over 300 prayers, with opening prayers, confessions, intercessions and blessings set out for the Christian Year and specific topics. The material is drawn from books already published by our popular author, John Cox and is brought together here to assist those looking for background information, ideas for sermons, prayers and talks as they prepare to lead congregations in their worship. The reflections will both stimulate and encourage them in their own spiritual journey.Contents Feasts and FestivalsAdventAdvent wreaths and CandlesChristmasEpiphanyAsh WednesdayMothering SundayPalm SundayHoly WeekMaundy ThursdayGood FridayHoly SaturdayEasterThe biblical accountsThe Easter liturgya. John's Gospel includes a broad spectrum of witnesses to Jesus, whose wide-ranging responses and stories are an attempt to persuade audiences of their points of view on Jesus, which range from positive to negative. The evangelist wants his readers to become more confident in their faith, hence his desire to tell a credible story (or series of stories) about Jesus.Credible Witnesses follows John's lead by allowing many of his characters to speak about Jesus by telling their stories. This involves imagination and even conjecture at times. In each of the chapters of this book, a character's testimony is illuminated with some background information, before going on to show how John uses the testimony as part of the witness of his Gospel as a whole. Each chapter ends with some reflections that help to draw John's Gospel into the present. Accompanying downloads with PowerPoint presentation and many other resources. This book is aimed at Catholic schools and provides a step-by-step guide for children and young people to help them plan and lead their own collective worship. Written so that it can be used independently by upper Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage 3, the book details the building blocks of collective worship and then explains how children and young people can use these building blocks to plan and structure their own act of worship.Patricia Ainge provides a wealth of resources to help them get started, from suggestions for Scripture readings to suit different occasions to ideas about how to explore these readings to find the message for today. While the bulk of the book is written for young people, there are two short sections for the adults that support them where, among other things, ideas are given for using the book with younger children, or as a class resource. A PowerPoint presentation to support this is found in the downloads that accompanies the book, together with many resources to print and use.Planning and leading collective worship is immensely satisfying for young people, enabling them to use their gifts and their own experience to explore their relationship with God. It also provides an opportunity to develop skills such as leadership and teamwork, as well as giving young people a means to respond to different moments in their lives. This book is an essential resource to help them do that. Although written from a Catholic perspective, the idea of the book is that it could be suitable for all schools, including non-faith schools.

The author looks at the balance between God working in his people to produce the character of Christ and God working through his people to continue Christ's work on earth. He examines this interplay in 12 biblical character studies. Using a mixture of narrative, commentary, background and reflection on Jacob, Mary, Hosea, Barnabas and others, the author shows how their faith and obedience developed and affected other people as they learned to cooperate with God.

Ray Simpson's liturgical prayers for Christian festivals provide worship for individuals, new monastic groups, and churches. They reconnect the post 9/11 world with the seasons and the soil, the saints, and the streets, the struggles, senses, and silence, as well as the Spirit and the Scriptures. These inclusive patterns of worship are drawn from early and contemporary Celtic devotion, Anglican, Orthodox, Reformed and Roman Catholic sources. The Liturgies that appear in this book are taken from Liturgies from Lindisfarne by Ray Simpson.

A short and sweet sermon is a concise, encouraging word about a Bible passage that has come up in the readings of the day. Lightweight sermons are meant to be brief, with a punch and usually just one main message. These hundred small sermons are a write-up from memory of sermons that were first given live to a congregation, so they are somewhat more formal than the original spoken word. The idea of publishing these sermons is first of all for the reader to enjoy them and perhaps see the relevant Scripture passage in a new light. A minister or preacher may wish to borrow a thought or a prayer, or the whole sermon and use it with another congregation.Bible quotations are limited to one or at the most two for each short sermon, although there are usually several more unmarked Bible references in each. Included at the back of the book are an index of Scripture references and a thematic index to aid study.

Puppets are becoming an ever more popular medium for education and entertainment in schools, churches and theatres.Their larger-than-life characters and visual appeal fascinate audiences, young and old alike. This DVD and informative handbook take you through the art of bringing puppets alive. With clear instructions, step-by-step guides to rehearsal and sketches to put each step into practice, this manual is ideal whether you are working alone or setting up a team of puppeteers. From the smallest glove puppet to all kinds of large stage puppets, and from simple storytelling to team puppetry behind a screen, our essential how-to guide will help you to unlock the potential of this versatile art form.Puppets have some unique abilities and purposes that stem from the fact that they are able to act like people without actually being people. In education, this is important because the puppet can carry a burden which a person is unable or unwilling to carry. When a puppet is wrong, it is funny, but not embarrassing. When a puppet is sad, it invites empathy, but not sorrow. When a puppet asks a silly question, children feel good because they know the answer. The puppet doesn't feel stupid. It is surely this thick-skinned quality which makes a puppet such a useful tool in ministry. Featuring a range of useful sections, including using your puppet, starting to talk and behind the screens, this great new resource takes you through the "dos and don'ts" of puppetry to insure you are using this popular method to its greatest potential. Complete with an accompanying DVD of instructions and suggestions, this guide is a must-have for anyone involved in children's ministry.

Bound with sumptuously thick matt pages and full of vibrant yet inexpensive projects this is a real treat for young crafters! She wanted colouring pictures, doodle pages and word searches, all mixed together with a great selection of craft ideas to help teach Bible stories to children. Inspired by her work both as a volunteer helper with primary schools and as a craft activities co-ordinator for 'Seedlings'(an informal lay-led service for pre-schoolers), both books have been tried and tested!
